Consultation Responses
A separate pay scale for nursing would be divisive and unworkable, say AHPF member organisations (March 2024)
Professional bodies and trade unions across the AHP sector responded to the recent consultation on a separate pay scale for nursing with a resounding ‘no.’ AHP bodies said the proposal was deeply unhelpful and would go against the NHSE Workforce Plan objecgive of team cohesion. It would:
Lead to bad feeling and division across professions
Damage staff morale
Be impractical
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) launched the consultation as part of a commitment to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) during pay negotiations. Currently, pay for NHS staff, aside from doctors and dentists, is standardised and aligned through the Agenda for Change system.
AHPF argues that the proposal goes against the ethos of Agenda for Change, which was implemented to ensure that all non-medical staff receive equal pay for work of equal value and that the contribution of all receives proper recognition. The current recruitment and retention crisis in the NHS is not limited to nurses, it applies equally to dieticians, radiographers, physiotherapists, podiatrists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and other professions who have expressed their opposition. The introduction of a stand-alone pay system for nurses would be divisive and unfair and inevitably result in a surge in equal pay cases.
